Art inspired by Robert Owen’s Labour Notes

Art inspired by Robert Owen’s Labour Notes

An exhibition opened on 31st May at the Llantarnam Grange Art Centre that features art influenced by the Labour Notes from Robert Owen’s Labour exchange movement of the 1830s.
Sadia Pineda Hameed visited the Museum last year, met with the Curator, Colin Laker, and saw the labour notes and the original metal plate from which they were printed. Working with another artist, Kerstin Kartscher, they created their own artistic work, reimagining material representations of value, drawing on the design of the original 1830s notes and David Medalla’s MMMMMMM…. Manifesto (1965) to produce MMMM NOTE.
Sadia and Kerstin’s work is on display at the Llantarnam Grange gallery at St David’s Road, Cwmbran, both in the main gallery, and in the outdoor Billboard Gallery, as shown above, along with the metal plate and one of the labour notes that acted as inspiration, on temporary loan from the Museum.
MMMM NOTE is part of Perspective(s), a collaboration between Arts Council Wales and National Museum Wales, supported by the Welsh Government and is part of Sadia’s wider exhibition called Agimat, which is on between the 31st May and 16th August at Llantarnam Grange.

As part of the same project Sadia also has a display of artwork called Signals, running at Big Pit in Blaenavon from 31st May to 31st August.
